I said "I love you" inconsequently, and you repeated so confidently. We bathed in white smoke on a cold night. You let your garden grow in our light. But when you left it for the station, I told the conductor to keep you safe. I never saw you down in Memphis, but I love you, I always meant it.

Awash in the cistern again. Rubbing your hands off my skin. Wind whips my hair, I am purple and bare. I return to the earth and my sin. August and I'm losing touch. Leaving myself to your love. Moonlight astride, I am lovely tonight. You're treading me into a rut. Ice fell the cistern tonight. Losing my touch to your sight. Buried with bulbs, I am aching and swole, blissful and bashful and bright. Spring hits the coast on a lark. Love and the past that I part. The miles are mine but I need you tonight. I am tethered by twine in my heart.
